Rupert of Hentzau by Anthony Hope
Rupert of Hentzau by Anthony Hope 385 pages 📕📕📕📕
Maybe I should put Anthony Hope in with Charles Dickens and Percival Wren. What kind of an author betrays their reader so cruelly, so unjustly? How many times must my heart break in the fictional world of words? Books are supposed to be an escape (at least, the fictional ones are) from the mundane trials of the here and now. Or not.
Summary:
After Rassendyll saves Ruritania and heads back home the Queen and he keep up annual communication. Thus three years pass. Unfortunately, Rupert (dear soul) has discovered this exchange and has decided to bring such news to the already quite jealous King. Somehow Rupert gains hold of the Queen's letter to Rassendyll. With only hours to spare Rassendyll must once more come to the Queen's aid. Fritz, Sapt and Bernenstein risk all to help Rassendyll in his quest.
My thoughts:
1. Why did Rupert come back? Life was so innocent and pleasant before this. I would've been so much happier without this book. Rupert's so debonair and dastardly.
2. I would like to lay every vestige of blame at the feet of the Queen where it is due. If she had been intelligent to begin with none of this would have happened.
3. Bernenstein was a blessing and an asset to the entire team.
4. Rudolph Rassendyll.....Why did he ever go to Streslau? He's so bound by honor, so chivalrous, so good.
5. ....and thus he fell asleep. Worst. Chapter. Ending. Ever. Authors should not have the liberty to kill a character one has grown attached to.
6. It has the most exquisite humour. :)
Moral of the story: don't send amorous letters to a guy if you're married. End of story.
